I found a band that gives me main character energy
Discovering new music genres to escape reality.
Hey everyone,
My week was quite busy with several house chores, a couple of fun parties with friends, playing football after a year, watching Tumbbad on the big screen and polishing my net worth tracker sheet.
It’s clear from the previous newsletter that I’m neck deep into learning about Formula One. So now, F1 has completely taken over my YouTube recommendations. I’m not complaining. It has seriously bumped up my knowledge about the sport, and given me a closer look into the lives of the athletes. I ranked my favourites below.
Like a forgotten digital artifact, I ventured into my Pockets list of articles saved for later. It felt like a historical timeline of old articles and trends simply sitting there, waiting to be consumed. I did some basic hygiene of deleting the ones that don’t interest me anymore. This is a very important step that I frequently do, whether it’s articles, videos, books, games or films. You are never going to read or watch or play everything that has been created. The best way to enjoy them is to keep your lists short and prune them every now and then. Trust me, it brings more certainty and control to the content you consume.
How about you do it this week? Open your reading list on Goodreads or maybe your Watch Later playlist on YouTube. Remove the books or videos that might have looked appealing back then but you don’t fancy them anymore. Marie-Kondo those lists! Now you have an optimal list. Here’s wishing you a productive week of digital cleansing.
🗓️ In this week
📃 Articles
I yearn for fresh perspectives on films that I loved. Especially observations or interpretations that fit perfectly. This article: The Horror of Peace in Kong: Skull Island, does exactly that. My favourite film so far in the Monsterverse, it’s heavily focussed on violence and war. The author goes in much detail about some of the characters and their motivations to visit the island. And suddenly, this interpretation makes a lot of sense with an allegory towards a post-war era. “The whole concept of peace is fascinating in Kong: Skull Island. Those that are given it don’t want it, and those that do want it only wind up having it stripped away from them.” I’m rewatching this movie soon!
▶️ Videos
My appreciation for F1 and its athletes keep growing everyday as I go deeper into understanding the sport. The video below talks about the superhuman skills required by Formula One drivers to perform their best and continue competing with each other.
Kariza from Life of Riza has turned into one of my favourite creators on YouTube lately. Her video edits exude an upbeat and adventurous charm that was prevalent in the 2000’s high school Hollywood movies. Life lessons in the package of vlogs is what her channel is about and she does it so beautifully. This heart-warming video is about simply showing up for life, whether it’s for the little things or something bigger than you. Almost all her videos end by making you smile just like those silly teenage movies with happy endings.
Season 2 of The Last of Us already looks like it’s going to be a real tearjerker. The trailer is out and I’m not ok (in an appreciative way). I’m impressed how some of the scenes have been adapted so bloody brilliantly right from the game. 2025 can’t come soon enough!
Do you have any exciting recommendations? Some more interesting tidbits you would like to share from the content mentioned here? Or just simple feedback? I would love to hear from you!
🎵 Music
My discovery of new music continues from the Lollapalooza India 2025 line-up and it has been fulfilling. The latest favourite is Wave To Earth, a South Korean band that makes soothing lo-fi pop music. Their songs have a dreamy vibe, making them perfect to listen to when you’re simply lying in bed or daydreaming. I’ll be attending their set.
📺 TV Shows
HBO recently premiered the pilot episode of The Penguin starring Colin Farrell. Based in Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe, it kicks off right after the events of the film. I’ll be honest. I’ve hardly watched enough crime or gangster drama TV shows so I don’t have a strong reference. However, my good friends and a few trusted people on the internet have highlighted the show’s similarities with The Sopranos. And I have heard that it was peak mob drama. Coming back to me, the mafia themes in this show naturally connect with the bleak and gritty universe. And I was happy to see how Penguin’s character traits are hinted through the episode. To see how the show unfolds and realises his true potential of ultimately ruling Gotham’s underworld will be fun. You can be rest assured that I’ll be watching every episode whenever it premieres and get a mention here if they go beyond my expectations.
